Urinary incontinence is a cardinal symptom of menopause. In the majority of cases developed as perimenopausal urinary incontinence, this incontinence occurs in the form of stress urinary incontinence. Yet, not uncommonly, perimenopausal detrusor instability develops with or without the simultaneous presence of stress incontinence.
This review presents the pathophysiological basis of detrusor instability and substantiates the rationale for the hormone replacement therapy in the management of the disorder.
