E-selectin plays a very important role in phlogistic and atherosclerotic processes of the human organism. Expression of this membrane protein is found on inflammatory endothelial cells as a result of the action of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This protein is also present on atheromatous endothelium with coexisting leucocytic infiltrations. Hormone therapy of the menopausal period favourably reduces E-selectin levels, however this effect is dependent on hormonal doses, type of estrogen and progestogen used as well as on menopausal age, accompanying illnesses and addictions of women qualified for this type of treatment.
